INSIGHTS / MARKETING STRATEGY
Writing your marketing plan down is the highest-leverage step most businesses can take. The data says the effect is 414%.
Marketing without a written plan is not “flexible”. It is undecided. Every channel decision gets made in a meeting, paid for with a budget account, then judged with no benchmark attached. The fix is not more consultants. It is an act of writing.
414%
More likely to report success: marketers who document their marketing strategy, versus those who do not.
Source: CoSchedule Marketing Trend Report (survey of marketers), 2022. The number has been measured across multiple editions (538% in 2018, 414% in 2022) from surveys of 1,597+ marketers. Self-reported, correlational, vendor audience: treat it as a direction, not a guarantee.
The most damning number is the one about everyone else
Here is the uncomfortable part. Almost nobody does this.
42%
Share of businesses doing digital marketing with no digital marketing strategy at all, per Smart Insights research that has tracked this for 15+ years.
Source: Smart Insights research, “Future of Marketing” (RACE methodology). The share of businesses without a planned digital approach has hovered near half for over fifteen years of tracking. Restated by MediaValet, “Digital Marketing Statistics 2025”.
So the 414% is not a boutique finding about sophisticated teams. It is about average teams that did one manual step: they wrote the plan down. The gap between the two numbers is why a documented strategy is the closest thing marketing has to a free upgrade.
What “documented” actually means
Not a 40-page deck. A written answer to six questions:
1. Who are we selling to, and what are they currently doing instead of buying from us?
2. What does this quarter need to produce, in leads and revenue?
3. Which three channels are allowed to spend, and why those three?
4. Who owns each channel, and what is the weekly number they report?
5. What does a good lead look like, and what does a wasted one cost us?
6. What will we stop doing the moment a channel underperforms?
Answer those in writing and every campaign decision stops being a personality contest. It becomes a check against the plan.
Where to start without inventing a plan from scratch
A plan written from hope is still fiction. The honest starting point is the current machine: what is being tracked, what is converting, where the budget actually leaks. That is the audit. It turns the six questions above from guesses into a written, priced, prioritized list, and you keep everything it finds whether you work with Convertxity or not.
Build the plan from the facts. Not from hope.
